The Valle Cannobina with its countless mountain pastures and tiny hamlets scattered across its sunniest slopes rises immediately behind Cannobio. The valley has much to offer in terms of easy day trips and more demanding excursions.
An interesting tour by car, with plenty of opportunities to stop and walk around unusual and evocative places, departs from Cannobio, climbs along the Valle Cannobina, enters the Valle Vigezzo and reaches Locarno in Switzerland via the Centovalli before returning to Cannobio along the lake shore road. Places of interest: Malesco, S. M. Maggiore, Re, Ponte Brolla.

The Orrido di S.Annais the natural gateway to the Valle Cannobina (and a short walk from the centre of the village): a medieval church and Romanesque bridge built at the entrance to the plunging gorge cut by the Cannobino torrent. The setting is truly breathtaking.
Carmine Superiore, an ancient 10th-12th century village perched on a rocky spur overlooking much of the lake, is just a few kilometres from Cannobio and can be reached via an easy footpath.

The Val Grande National Park awaits more demanding and experienced walkers. This unique valley just a few kilometres from the shores of Lake Maggiore is a silent realm in which nature is king, an environmental sanctuary.
The wealth and variety of its vegetation constitute one of the Val Grande's major attractions; this remarkable natural heritage is partly due to the climatic conditions and the thermal influence of Lake Maggiore. Given the park's rugged wilderness character, you should explore its network of footpaths with great care and in the company of expert guides.
(guided excursions are organised on a weekly basis). www.parcovalgrande.it
